What is IELTS?

The full form is International English Language Test which is a language test designed to help you work, study or migrate to a country where English is the native language.

Countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and USA etc. require you to take the IELTS test and attain a certain score.

This test examines your ability to listen, read, write and speak in English and gives you a grade on the scale of 1 – 9.

IELTS is owned by the IDP: IELTS Australia and the Cambridge Assessment. The IELTS scores are recognised by more than 10,000 organisations, including educational institutions, employers, professional associations and governments in 140 countries around the world.

Listening, Reading, and Writing sections of IELTS exam are conducted on the same day one after the other without any breaks in between the sections. The speaking test is conducted separately which may be on the same day or any day up to a week before or after the main test date.

IELTS Format

The IELTS test gives you flexibility to choose either a computer-based or paper-based pattern.

Paper-based

Here candidates will take the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections on paper with HB-pencils all on the same day. The speaking test is conducted Face to Face with an IELTS examiner. The test scores for the paper based exam are provided 13 days after the exam date.

Computer-based

In the computer based option the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are conducted on a computer in an exam centre. The speaking test is conducted Face to Face with an expert IELTS examiner.

IELTS Modules

The test comes in two different types to fulfill the different purposes of the candidates. In both formats, the test will assess your English language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking.

1. IELTS Academic

The Academic test is suitable for candidates who require IELTS for academic purposes, mostly to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels or for professional registration in an environment where English is a primary language of communication.

 

IELTS Academic Test Format

There are four sections to the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

  1. Listening (30 minutes)
    • Four recorded monologues and conversations.
  2. Reading (60 minutes)
    • Three long reading passages with tasks.
    • Texts may include diagrams, graphs or illustrations.
    • Texts are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers.
  3. Writing (60 minutes)
    • Summarise, describe or explain a table, graph, chart or diagram.
    • Short essay task of at least 250 words.
  4. Speaking (11-14 minutes)
    • Face-to-Face interview without disruptions or distractions.
    • Includes short questions, speaking at length about a familiar topic and a structured discussion.

Test duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes

2. IELTS General Training

The general training test is suitable for the candidates who are planning to migrate for Permanent residency or jobs to an English speaking country, like Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the UK.

 

IELTS General Training Test Format

There are four sections to the test: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

  • Listening (30 minutes) – (30 – 40 minutes) You will have to listen to four recordings and then answer the questions asked. The recordings are of native English speakers and the duration of the test is 30 minutes.
  • Reading (60 minutes) – The IELTS Reading test requires you to answer 40 questions and is designed to test you on an array of reading skills. You would have to read for gist, main ideas, details, logical arguments, and figure out the writers’ opinions.
  • Writing (60 minutes) – The IELTS writing test requires you to complete two tasks and covers topics of general interest based on the module you are taking.

    Letter writing
    Essay of at least 250 words

  • Speaking (11-14 minutes) – The IELTS Speaking test assesses your spoken English skills. The test is recorded and conducted in three parts.

 

Test duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes
